1. Use special packing materials designed for overseas shipping

  • Packing paper keeps items clean and stain-free during transit where the ink from newsprint will soil items wrapped for a long time, and can even permanently stain more permeable items.
  • Bubble wrap not only cushions items effectively during a long voyage, but will also retain its cushioning should it get wet, and can afford a degree of waterproofing when completely sealed with packing tape. Be sure to invest in a tape dispenser to allow you to tape your packages efficiently.
  • Non-acidic clear wrap or plastic bags should be used to package oil paintings, documents and items made from paper products. Over the course of a long journey, certain types of packing materials, including newsprint and some types of packing paper, can cause these materials to discolour. Using non-acidic wrap will keep them safe, and will also add a degree of waterproofing when generously sealed with packing tape.

2. Don't pack everything!

In your haste to pack everything away to prepare for your overseas removal, don’t accidentally pack any of these items at the bottom of your t-chest!...

  • Travel documents and necessities such as chequebook, passport, visas or airline tickets
  • Financial documents such as mortgage papers and insurance policies
  • Important papers such as driver's licenses, birth certificates, etc.
  • Family information, including school transcripts, health and immunization records, medical records and prescriptions
